Am I exempt from the 80-hour work rule?
Answer a few yes-or-no questions. You’ll see which exemptions might fit you for SNAP, Medicaid or both. It takes about a minute and nothing you check is saved or sent anywhere.
How exemptions work
Exemptions aren’t automatic everywhere. Your state may already know from its records (for example, your age or a disability benefit). If it doesn’t, you usually have to tell your caseworker and sometimes show proof, like a doctor’s note or a school schedule. If a notice says you have to meet the work rule and you think you’re exempt, answer it before the deadline and say why.
Recently removed SNAP exemptions
Under the 2025 law, these groups are no longer automatically exempt from the SNAP time limit:
- Veterans (no longer automatically exempt)
- People experiencing homelessness (no longer automatically exempt)
- Former foster youth age 24 or younger (no longer automatically exempt)
- Living with a child age 14-17 (no longer exempt)
- Age 55-64 (no longer exempt)
Keep proof of every hour
my80hours is a free app that logs your hours, saves photos of pay stubs and sign-in sheets, gets volunteer letters signed, and makes a PDF for your caseworker. No sign-up. Your info stays on your phone.
